Did Langdon Get It Wrong?

There are mainly three theories proposed in the Da Vinci Code.                                                         

1.     Jesus was a mere mortal.
2.   Mary Magdalene was the wife of Jesus.
3.   Mary Magdalene was the beloved disciple.

Yet the Da Vinci Code gives us enough proof to dismiss these theories.

• Why Jesus was not a ‘mere mortal’?

The Priory of Sion is the best answer. According to Les Dossiers Secrets:

“Priory Grandmasters included Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Sir Isaac Newton, Victor Hugo and more recently, Jean Cocteau, the famous Parisian artist.”

You will all agree that these men were the most enlightened souls of their era. Now let’s take into account another fact that is before us.

“The Priory of Sion, to this day, still worships Mary Magdalene as the Goddess, the Holy Grail, the Rose and the Divine Mother.”

Why would they worship the wife of a mortal man as a Goddess? Its just ironic. The only way it would make sense is if Jesus is God. And believe me these are honorable men!

Another interesting fact is the accusation that the Church tried to defame Mary Magdalene. For one, Mary Magdalene is considered a saint. Besides she is the first witness to the Risen Christ. No one would be foolish enough to discredit their prime witness!

The excerpts from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene is also interesting.

And Peter said, "Did the Saviour really speak with a woman without our knowledge? Are we to turn about and all listen to her? Did he prefer her to us?"

And Levi answered, "Peter, you have always been hot-tempered. Now I see you contending against the woman like an adversary. If the Saviour made her worthy, who are you indeed to reject her? Surely the Saviour knows her very well. That is why he loved her more than us."  

There is a debate regarding the context. Though it is mentioned in the Da Vinci Code to have taken place before the capture and crucification of Christ,  the Bible suggests that it took place after the rise.

If you read the Gospel of Luke [ 24: 10-12 ] and Gospel of Mark [ 16: 10-11 ], you will find that the disciples found it hard to believe that Christ first appeared and spoke to the women rather than them. And since we are talking about events after the resurrection of Christ, Jesus could not have been a mere mortal, right?

• Why Mary Magdalene is not the wife of Jesus?

Again I would like to turn to the Gnostic Gospels. According to the Gospel of Philip:

And the companion of the Saviour is Mary Magdalene. Christ loved her more than all the disciples and used to kiss her often on her mouth. The rest of the disciples were offended by it and expressed disapproval. They said to him, "Why do you love her more than all of us?" 

Would it be so bad if Jesus had a girlfriend?

Langdon has the answer.

"Because Jesus was a Jew," Langdon said, taking over while Teabing searched for his book, "and the social decorum during that time virtually forbid a Jewish man to be unmarried.”

So its highly improbable that Mary Magdalene was his girlfriend. Either she was his wife or Jesus was a bachelor. Now lets suppose that Mary was his wife. Why should the disciples be offended by the sight of their master kissing his wife? And why the question? Is it not appropriate for a man to love his wife more than all others? After all, the disciples were not naïve children. They were grown men who understood the laws of nature. Besides of all the passages in the book which implied a romantic relationship between Jesus and Mary, was this the best Teabing could come up with? A kiss?

•  Why Magdalene was not the beloved disciple?

Though there are 2 episodes ( one during the crucification and other during the rise) when the Beloved Disciple and Mary Magdalene meet, conspiracy theorists like to dismiss them as fabrications to hide the true identity of the Beloved Disciple.

But if Teabing is to be believed Mary Magdalene was of royal blood. She belonged to the tribe of Benjamin ( its another fact that 1/12^th of the Jews could probably trace their ancestry to Benjamin and that only a descendant of Saul could stick any claim to the throne). She had powerful family ties. So basically she was royalty.

Another suggestion is that she was not at good terms with Peter as he considered her as a threat. So my question is what was the beloved disciple thinking when she, a widow (if she was the wife of Jesus) went fishing (not exactly the profession of a princess) with her greatest threat, Peter. Besides the Beloved Disciple has a good rapport with Peter. Peter gestures to the Beloved Disciple to ask who would betray the Lord. He asks what was to become of the Beloved Disciple when Lord appeared before him. As for the sword in the Last Supper, Peter showed it to Christ because he asked them if they had any swords with them.    

So if not Mary Magdalene, then who is the Holy Grail? The answer is quite symbol and the clues are in the Da Vinci Code. All you have to do is give it an unbiased look.

As the Priory of Sion said “The Goddess, The Holy Grail, The Rose and The Divine Mother”. There is only one woman that fits the bill. Mary. Not Mary Magdalene but the other Mary- Mother Mary. The Goddess in the Gospels.  The feminine force that holds the Church together.
