BOOK REVIEW : CYRANO de BERGERAC

Rating: 4

Genre: Romance

Author: Edmond Rostand

Note: A French Play

Synopsis:

Cyrano de Bergerac is a cadet in the French army. He is a man of many talents, a skilled swordsman and a brilliant scholar. He is hopelessly in love with his distant cousin, Roxane. There is only one thing that is stopping him from proclaiming his love- his large nose, which makes him hideous.
Just when he musters enough courage to proclaim his love to her, Roxane requests his help. She has fallen in love with a soldier in Cyrano’s company and she wants to know whether he is a good match for her. Cyrano meets this lucky young man, Christian, who has also fallen in love with Roxane. But though Christian has the charms and a good heart, he is not a scholar like Roxane. So, Cyrano decides to help Christian by writing his love letters for him. He also pours his own love for Roxane through Christian. What will Roxane do when she finds out the truth? Who will she choose?

Plus Points: Many memorable characters. Romance, humor, action and tragedy can all be found in equal proportions. Megamind seems to be inspired from this story.

Fascinating Fact:  The story is loosely based on the life of an actual person named Cyrano de Bergerac.

Remark: A heart touching play. It can be thought of as the mother of all triangle love stories. The play may appear to be a bit old and the cover may not look good. But don't judge a book by its cover.

Who should read this: Those with a genuine love for classics like The Count of Monte Cristo.

Who shouldn't read this: Those who like a bit more modern and down to earth love stories.
